Stephen Capista, LMHC, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who takes a thoughtful, practical, and supportive approach to helping clients better understand their emotions, patterns, and life experiences. He believes in the value of self-evaluation, authenticity, and taking ownership of one’s outcomes. Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Stephen earned his undergraduate degree from Saint Joseph’s University in 2008 and completed his Master of Science degree at Nova Southeastern University in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2021.
Stephen works with adolescents and adults ages 16 and older. He welcomes clients of all genders and has a particular interest in supporting men, who may sometimes avoid therapy because of stigma or the belief that seeking help is a sign of weakness. He values helping normalize mental health care for men while providing an inclusive, nonjudgmental space for every client.
His clinical interests include ADHD, anxiety, depression, grief, bipolar I and II disorders, borderline personality disorder, mood instability, anger concerns, and acute stress. Stephen is also interested in the ways biological and cultural influences can shape a person’s mental health experiences.
Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and solution-focused therapy, Stephen helps clients identify their strengths, gain new perspectives, build healthier relationships, and develop a more positive self-image. His approach emphasizes practical strategies and meaningful progress.
Stephen’s professional background includes providing mental health therapy in Jacksonville, Florida; teaching academic subjects and horticulture at a private school in Ponte Vedra, Florida; serving as Lead Staff for groups in a short-term residential program in Windsor, New Hampshire; and working as an Intervention Specialist in the Oakland Unified School District in Oakland, California.
Stephen views mental health care much like physical fitness: consistent effort through difficult moments can build strength and lead to lasting transformation. He is committed to helping clients embrace that process at a pace that feels constructive, realistic, and supportive.
