Specialized Care for Young Minds

Our specialized care is available through both our resident clinic and our board-certified psychiatrists. We provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and treatment recommendations tailored to each child’s needs.

Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluations

Our thorough evaluation process helps identify and understand the mental health challenges your child may be facing. These evaluations typically last 1-2 hours and involve gathering detailed information about your child’s development, behavior, emotions, and overall functioning.

Medication Management

When appropriate, our specialists can prescribe and monitor medications to help manage various mental health conditions. We take an extremely careful approach to medication, prescribing the lowest effective dose and monitoring for any side effects.

Consultation Services

We work collaboratively with your child’s primary care doctor, medical specialists, or therapists to create a complete treatment plan. This integrated approach makes sure that all aspects of your child’s care are coordinated and effective.

Second Opinion

If your child has already received a diagnosis or treatment plan elsewhere, we can review these evaluations to answer questions, provide a professional second opinion, or offer additional diagnostic and treatment suggestions.

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Resident Clinic (CAPRC)

The CAPRC is a unique collaboration between WellStead Mental Health and the UCF/HCA Psychiatry Residency program. This clinic offers specialized psychiatric care for children and adolescents while providing valuable training for resident physicians.

  • Residents are licensed physicians in their second year of specialty training
  • Each resident spends 2 months in the clinic before continuing to other training opportunities
  • Dr. Mark Stickland, our Board Certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, supervises all clinic visits
  • Dr. Strickland is on-site and immediately available during every appointment
  • While residents manage the majority of each visit, Dr. Stickland will personally see you and/or your child during your appointment
  • Diagnostic psychiatric evaluations
  • Consultation and partnership with your child’s PCP, medical specialist, and/or therapist
  • Review of past evaluations and treatment plans
  • Ongoing medication management and monitoring
  • Child custody evaluations
  • Court-ordered or forensic evaluations
  • Disability evaluations
  • “Safe to return” letters (for school or work after an incident)
  • Ongoing psychotherapy or counseling
  • Psychological testing (though this is available through CCP Psychology)

FAQs About Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services

Initial evaluation visits typically last about two hours. We recommend that both parents of the primary residence attend the first appointment, if possible. Please bring any past evaluations or available records to help us understand your child’s history and needs more completely.
Medication decisions for young people are made carefully, considering the balance of potential benefits against possible side effects. We prefer a conservative approach, especially with younger patients, and often use medication as just one component of a comprehensive treatment plan.

For families with joint/split custody or shared medical decision-making, all parties with legal custody must consent to the evaluation and treatment. A parent claiming full custody may be asked to provide documentation.

This policy is in place to help us respect legal custody arrangements and ensure all legal guardians are informed and involved in a child’s mental healthcare.

Additional Considerations

  • Please allow one hour for all follow-up visits after the initial evaluation
  • If a resident is unavailable, Dr. Strickland will cover the CAPRC appointment
  • As part of the resident’s training, Dr. Strickland will have access to live closed-circuit video monitoring of all sessions, though these are never recorded or archived
  • A consent form for video monitoring will be provided at your first visit
